So much have been said about the subject of love that some people have lost sight of the true meaning of love and become confused.
This has not done so much good to us since this distortion accounts for a great deal of evil that has been perpetuated under the sun.
Let me ask you a simple question “What is love to you and from where did you get that definition of love?”
It is common to find a young man who wants to have premarital sex use words like “prove your love to me” all in bid to get her to satisfy his uncontrolled desires. If you find yourself in such a situation; RUN!
Love is patient. Anyone who can not wait to have you but wants sex in a hurry is a hit-and-run. If he/she truly loved you, waiting will be done with much anticipation.
In my journey through life, I have found a few definitions or indications of love from The Word of God and I want to share two of them with you. (I’m still open to finding more each day)
- Love is Giving
This is so profound. This was one of my first discoveries. You cannot love and not give. Its impossible! Its possible to give without loving but you can’t love without giving. This is not restricted to money and material gifts only. This includes your time, your energy, commitment and attention among other things.
God Himself showed this when He sent Jesus Christ to redeem us from our fallen state – a state of slavery to satan and his wicked schemes. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes on Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16 and The Lord commanded us to love even as He loved us; “ A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.” – John 13:34
- Love is Obedient This is another thing I have discovered from the scriptures and it is especially important that we know this in our walk with God. “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” – John 14:15 I don’t want to be numbered among the many people who act and talk like they love God but don’t. I want to be for real. How about you?
- Love is corrects Sincerely
This is one thing I’m still learning and struggling with in my own life. I find myself not correcting certain people whom I know I love (or rather think I love) sometimes when they are saying things that are not exactly true or are acting in ways they ought to have outgrown.Sometimes because I don’t want them to get hurt or feel inferior. Here’s what the scripture says about God in proverbs 3:12 “…for whom the Lord loveth he correcteth;…” and Hebrews 12:6; “…Because the Lord corrects everyone he loves…“
So take a cue from The Lord and start to sincerely correct the people you love as appropriate, they’ll appreciate you sincerely for it.
Do you really love the people you claim to love?
That’s it for today, I love you so I’ve set aside time to write this article for you. I’ve got to go love some other people in my life too. 😉
