I like to make profits – big profits!
Well, who doesn’t?
Isn’t that why so many Nigerians got burnt in one of the biggest ponzi schemes of recent times…MMM? I’ve personally met or heard of at least 5 people (either in the universty or fresh graduates) who lost huge sums to the schemes.
The most painful being the young man who invested the money he was supposed to travel abroad for further studies to do MMM.
Too sad.
This further reveals how poorly equipped our university graduates when it comes to thriving in the real world of money. Well, let’s move on.
While I’ve become quite skilled in assessing opportunities, I’ve come to acknowledge a single investment that altered the whole of my life and that’s what I’ll share with you in the paragraphs that follow.
So what’s the most profitable investment I’ve made on my entrepreneurial journey?
The investment I made on my mind.
You see my friend, I studied Chemistry Education in a University of Technology… It had absolutely nothing to do with money. (At least not until we had to do GST 311 – Entrepreneurship. I loved that course! 🙂 )
But a few years before I got into the unversity I came in contact with certain people who altered the course of my life… I remain grateful to God for my brother Moshood who bought the first financial education book I read – “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki and Mr. Suleiman who introduced me to the world of online business and the entrepreneurial magazine which I later became addicted to – “Success Digest Extra” published by Dr. Sunny Ojeagbase.
You see my friend, from then on…
It was like a spell that could not be broken.
I read from one book to the next, spent hours upon hours on the internet…searching for what I could not articulate in words…any and everything entrepreneurship.
No. I wasn’t really making money at the time – at least I spent much more than I made.
But here’s the truth… the profit I’ve gained from that investment is only beginning to spring forth.
I’ll share a few of that with you in this post.
1. Ability to recognize opportunities.
You don’t see money with your eyes… you see it with your mind’s eye.
I’ve milked money out of situations, events and places that you would least expect.
Why?
I invest in my mind.
2. Ability to assess opportunities and spot fraud schemes.
I wrote an article to expose the ponzi scheme MMM before it crashed, I got criticised, those who listened took caution – it crashed anyway.
How was I able to recognize the fact that it was not going to survive it?
Understanding of how money is made and how a real investment works.
How did I get that understanding?
Investing in my mind.
I could go on and on but I’d rather leave you with these two.
Finally, I’d like you to know that investing in your mind – your education – is the most important investment you can make if you want to start and run a successful business.
Don’t go off hoping your case will be different – do something to make it so.
I found something profound one time and it has revolutionized my life.
“My people perish for lack of knowledge” – Hosea 4:6
You can belong to God and still perish – not because of the devil but your ignorance.
Refuse ignorance today.
Invest in your mind.
Buy and read good books.
Pay to attend seminars.
Buy Tapes and Training Videos.
Whatever you do be sure to buy the TRUTH!
Next week, I’ll share some books every entrepreneur who wants to succeed in business should read.
