Wouldn’t it be disheartening to think that God has completely abandoned those of us sent into the marketplace without giving us clear guides with which we can thrive? Of course! Why send me on an errand without a map to get to my destination?
Thankfully this is not the case.
What is a principle?
A principle is a fundamental truth or proposition serving as the foundation for belief or action.
If God is interested in us doing business, what are the principles he has laid down for us to attain business success?
They are scattered all over the bible ánd in this series, I’ll share seven of them with you.
#1 – Small Beginnings
“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin…” – Zachariah 4:10
Have you ever delayed starting out on a venture you knew was going to work because you did not have sufficient capital?
Often times when I talk with people who want to start a business, one of the first thing that seems to come out of their mouth is “I am looking for capital” and when you ask them how much capital you’ll be amazed at the amounts they mention.
The problem I see with most of these people is that they fail to realize that every great vision has a starting point.
The bible encourages us not to despise the days of little beginnings and reassures us that even though the beginning seem small the later end will be great.
Little beginnings allow us to test our ideas, learn on a ‘safe’ platform, build our character and clarify our convictions and strategy.
They also afford you the opportunity to make mistakes and learn from them lessons which will enable you take on bigger tasks.
Jesus described the business he was out to establish as a mustard seed which although is very small grows into a mighty tree which attracts the birds who come to build their nest on it and also gives shade to weary people. (Matthew 13:31)
You must understand that starting small means different things to different people. Someone who has had several years of experience and has plenty of cash set aside to hire experts and invest in marketing wouldn’t exactly be starting out at the same place with someone who’s starting out with nothing. They’re on a different level of small. 😉
Start small and grow. Carefully pay attention to figure out what you can do with the resources you have right now.
As much as possible, don’t borrow money to start a business. The only thing that starts from the top is usually a grave.
